Things that make this trip unique

Greenland has been on the Wild Fibers radar since 2018. We are enchanted by its unique culture and stunning landscape, and yes ... its musk ox. As with all of our trips from India's High Himalayas to the jungles of South Africa, our goal is to provide an authentic local experience and now we have found it.

Polar Latitudes, the company that we have been partnering with since 2017 for our Antarctic expeditions has merged with Albatros Expeditions, a Danish-owned company that has been running tours to Greenland for 30 years. They are not just tour operators. Søren Rasmussen, the founder is a distinguished biologist and tour leader with a passion for remote regions, coupled with an exquisite sensitivity to the environment.  Albatros Expeditions does more than lead tours, they been investing in Greenlandic communities to help develop local economies and provide better education. As a result, we can immerse ourselves in Inuit culture with in-home visits.

The newly formed Polar Latitudes-Expeditions gives us the opportunity to explore a new destination with the familial spirit of an old friend and the local expertise of a new one. We can't wait for our first adventure together.

Pricing

Kindly note pricing is per person (single staterooms available) and includes roundtrip airfare from Copenhagen, Denmark to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, where we board the ship. While this may seem a bit out of the way for North American-based guests, the main airport in Nuuk is prone to enormous weather issues and subsequent delays.  Despite its proximity, we caution against flying directly to Nuuk and taking a local flight to Kangerlussuaq.

If we haven't persuaded you to choose otherwise, you will receive a $500 flight credit should you go directly to the ship. Alternatively, there are plenty of wild fibers excursions to explore in and around Copenhagen.

25% non-refundable deposit due at booking.
Balance due 120 days before sailing.

A word about expedition cruising

Expedition cruising is a very different experience than what is traditionally offered by massive vessels, catering to a cast of thousands onboard. These smaller ships (less than 200 passengers) are designed to access remote destinations that frequently don't even have a pier for disembarking, therefore relying on 10-passenger Zodiacs to explore more remote destinations.

Questions and Answers

What is the weather like?

By September, Greenland begins transitioning into autumn with cooler temperatures in the mid-40s (F) and approaching freezing at night. Snow is a possibility. However, September is also considered the best month to view the Northern Lights.  Imagine being nestled in one of the ship's two outdoor jacuzzis to enjoy this extraordinary spectacle.

What about seasickness?

One of the great benefits of Ocean Albatros's X-bow design is its ability to minimize a certain amount of jostling from rough seas. While this not a guarantee that you won't feel "the motion of the ocean" to be on a larger vessel would negate the beauty (and possibilities) provided by this voyage.

If this is an expedition, what are the physical requirements?

Each person must be ambulatory, The amount of walking or hiking is at the sole discretion of the individual and may limit access to certain destinations.  If walking long distances or along uneven surfaces is problematic, hiking poles are strongly recommended.
